New Zealand continues to have very large, very shallow earthquakes. One of the world’s cleanest, most beautiful cities has been devastated twice, with a recent third large quake as Christmas presents were being wrapped. The “Ring of Fire” is very much active, especially in that spot. The last quake was just off the coast, causing damage to onshore buildings. If it were a bit larger, an immediate tsunami might have resulted, giving no time to escape. This is what occurred in Japan. I have personally been to both places, and Christchurch sits in a very vulnerable spot should a tsunami occur.
The resilient citizenry of Christchurch is in fear of just “what’s next.” I am hoping for a quieter New Year for Christchurch and New Zealand in 2012.

Imagine surviving the biggest earthquake ever in the recorded history of your country. Just when you sigh relief that you have been spared, you begin to assist your family and neighbors, only to see a tsunami coming. With both those disasters somewhat behind you, hear comes a melt-down of your nuclear power system.
JAPAN HAS HAD THE “PERFECT STORM” of disasters. ARE YOU GIVING TO THE RELIEF EFFORT? Bobby Vassallo

On Tuesday, a 6.3-magnitude quake hit Christchurch, New Zealand. Ninety-eight people are confirmed dead and another 200 are still missing. A day after the quake, 80 percent of the city was still without water and about 40 percent had no power. Emergency teams from around the world are working in Christchurch to find people buried beneath the rubble. COULD HAVE BEEN MUCH WORSE. http://bit.ly/fQZjqE
